How to Play Drift Boss

One button, two directions and an endless road in the sky. This guide explains the controls, the drift, the scoring and everything else you see on screen.

The goal

Drift Boss is about distance. Your car drives forward by itself along a road made of square tiles that floats high above the clouds. You do not control the speed and there is no brake: your only job is to steer so the car stays on the road. Your score is the distance you cover, shown in meters at the top of the screen, and one fall over the edge ends the run, unless you use a Second Chance.

There are no levels and no finish line. The road goes on for as long as you can stay on it, and your best distance is kept so you always have a number to beat.

One button, two directions

The road is one tile wide and only ever runs in two diagonal directions on screen: up-right (↗) and up-left (↖). At every corner it turns 90° from one direction to the other. Because there are only two directions, one button is all you need:

DeviceSteer right (↗)Steer left (↖)
MouseHold the left mouse button anywhere on the gameRelease the button
Touch screenTouch and hold anywhere on the gameLift your finger
KeyboardHold Space or ↑Release the key

Think of it this way: while you hold, the car wants to go up-right; while you do not, it wants to go up-left. A road that turns right means "start holding", a road that turns left means "let go".

On a computer, click the game once so it has focus before you use the keyboard. On a phone you can touch anywhere on the game area; you do not need to hit the car or a special button.

How the drift works

The car does not snap to the new direction the moment you press or release. It rotates toward it at a limited rate, and for a short moment it keeps sliding the way it was going before the tires grip again. That slide is the drift: you see tire smoke and skid marks on the road and hear the tires squeal.

The drift is why the most important habit in Drift Boss is to turn a little early. If you wait until the car is already on the corner tile, it will still be sliding toward the outside when the road has turned, and it can run off the edge. Start the turn slightly before the corner tile and the car swings around and lines up with the new straight.

Not too early, though: switch a whole tile too soon and the car cuts the corner and drops off on the inside. A few runs are enough to get a feel for it.

Corners and straights

Every straight is between 2 and 9 tiles long. Early in a run the straights are long and the car is slow, which gives you time to read the road. As your distance grows, the car speeds up and long straights become rarer, so corners arrive faster and closer together. The speed has a cap, and the road is generated so that every corner can be taken.

Short straights are where most runs end: two corners in quick succession mean a quick hold and release. Keep your eyes on the road ahead of the car, not on the car itself, so you see these pairs coming.

Falling off

If the centre of the car leaves the road, the car tips over the edge and falls into the clouds, and the run is over.

Only the centre of the car counts. The wheels can hang over the edge for a moment during a wide drift, as long as the middle of the car stays above the road.

After a fall you see your distance, your best distance (with a "New best!" highlight when you beat it), the coins you picked up and your perfect turns in that run. From there you can press Drive again or visit the Garage.

Perfect turns and streaks

When you take a corner cleanly, so the car stays close to the centre line all the way through the turn, the game shows Perfect! and adds 5 bonus meters to your score. Perfect turns in a row build a streak, and the streak multiplies the bonus:

Perfect turns in a rowStreakBonus for that corner
1–+5 m
2×2+10 m
3×3+15 m
4×4+20 m
5 or more×5+25 m

Any corner that is not perfect resets the streak, and the next perfect turn starts again at +5. The current streak appears on screen once it is above one. A slightly messy corner costs you only the streak, while a fall costs the whole run.

Coins and coin stacks

  • Coins float above some tiles. Drive through one and it adds +1 to your coins.
  • Now and then you will see a coin stack. It is rarer and worth +5.
  • Coins are kept between runs. You spend them on new cars in the Garage or on a Second Chance.

Coins sit on the road, so you collect most of them simply by driving well. Never swing wide just to grab one.

Second Chance

Once per run, after a fall, a prompt offers to let you continue for 30 coins. You have four seconds to choose Continue – 30 coins or No thanks. If you continue, the car is placed back on the last tile it was on, lined up with the road, and a 3-2-1 countdown gives you time to get ready. The distance you had already driven is kept.

If you have fewer than 30 coins, the prompt does not appear and the run simply ends.

Sceneries

The world around the road changes with your distance:

  • Meadow, 0 to 499 m: green islands and trees under a blue sky.
  • Desert, 500 to 999 m: sand, cacti and a warm orange sky.
  • Snow, 1,000 to 1,499 m: snowy pines and cool light.
  • Night, 1,500 to 1,999 m: street lamps and glowing road edges.

After 2,000 m the cycle starts again with Meadow. The scenery never changes how the road or the car behaves.

Pausing and sound

Press P or Esc, or tap the pause button in the top-right corner, to pause. The pause screen has Resume, Restart and a sound toggle. The game also pauses by itself when you switch to another tab, so you will not lose a run to a notification.

All sounds are generated in your browser: the engine hum, the tire squeal, the coin chime and the "perfect" ding. Press M or use the sound toggle on the start or pause screen to mute or unmute at any time.

Saving your progress

Your best distance, coin total, the cars you own, the car you selected and the sound setting are saved in your browser on this device. There is no account. If you clear the site data for DriftBoss.game or switch to another device or browser, you start fresh.
